Let’s Talk About Hair Extension Placement

(and Why It Changed Everything for Me)

Hey guys, it’s Danielle here —founder of Natural Beaded Rows® and Isla Hand-Tied Hair.

I wanted to write this quick post because there’s something I get asked about all the time: hair extension placement. And honestly? It’s one of the biggest reasons why I created the NBR method in the first place.

I’ve never had great hair. I always joke that I have toddler hair—super fine, doesn’t grow in on the sides, and always kind of mullet-y. Even as a kid, my mom kept my hair short because it just wouldn’t grow. That frustration stuck with me for years and eventually became the reason I created my own hair extension method.

Why Placement Matters So Much

When I first started wearing extensions over 20 years ago, I hated how bulky they felt and how much damage they caused—especially when the hair was placed too low or stacked the wrong way.

That’s what makes NBR different.

With NBR, the row isn’t squared off across the back of the head like most beaded methods. It’s tilted—starting higher near the face and following the natural curve of the hairline. That means I can pull my hair up in a ponytail and get fullness in the spots I need it most (hello, sides!).

I wear two rows and a mini, and no one ever sees them—even when my hair is up. The placement is key.

No Damage—Even with Fine Hair

I’ve heard it a million times: “Don’t extensions ruin your hair?”

Not if they’re done right.

NBR was created specifically with fine, low-density hair in mind (like mine). It’s designed to protect your natural hair, not destroy it. And after two decades of wearing extensions, my scalp and hairline are still in great shape—because I never mess around with bad placement or tension.

Why I Created Isla Hand-Tied Hair

After working with so many types of hair over the years, I realized I needed a weft that matched the quality and standards of the NBR method.

That’s why I launched Isla.

It’s:

  • Hand-sewn (for a super natural look)

  • Made with longer-lasting color (less fading!)

  • Has more grams per weft (so you get more fullness with fewer wefts)

  • Low in silicone (because no one wants shiny, fake-looking hair)

Right now, I wear 8 wefts total—four on my bottom row, four on my main row, and one mini piece that’s cut and stacked for a little boost. It gives me all the volume I want without needing to overload my head with too much hair.

Thinking About Getting Extensions?

Whether you’re someone who’s been on the fence or a stylist wanting to learn a better way—I always say: do your research.

✔️ Know the method✔️ Know the hair✔️ And most importantly, know the artist

We have a certified artist locator on our website, and if you’re a stylist who wants to get certified (or refresh your skills), I’d love to invite you to one of our NBR classes—we just opened a brand new training facility in Miami and have classes nationwide all through 2025.

Even if you’ve learned NBR years ago, we’re constantly evolving and improving. Come back, get the updated training, and leave feeling confident and dialed in.

Final Thoughts...

Creating NBR wasn’t just about hair for me—it was about confidence. It was about helping women like me who didn’t feel like they had “good hair” finally feel like the best version of themselves.

So whether you’re a client looking to feel amazing in your own skin or a stylist ready to take your craft to the next level, NBR and Isla were made for you.

Thanks for reading—share this with a friend who’s been thinking about extensions, and don’t forget to check out www.nbr.education for classes, artist info, and all things hair!

See you in the chair (or in class)!

xoxo,

Danielle
